Our client
J.C. is Marketing Director at a sports events organisation. She has all the skills of a great Marketing Director, and her track record has been flawless so far. Yet stepping into the role in August 2023 seems to represent a real challenge, both for her and for her employers. The reason? Quite simply: she isn't quite 30 years old yet.
Managing before 30: taking the lead over experienced teams
Yes, youth shouldn't be an obstacle when stepping into a role. Yet the reality of the professional world is quite different. Moving from an operational position to a leadership position is a delicate moment, whether staying at the same company or joining a new one.
Especially when you're in-between, like J.: no longer junior, but not quite senior either. So what posture should she adopt at that moment?
It obviously depends on the context, the existing team, and the missions. In her case, J. was facing older colleagues, had to take on leadership before even turning 30, and above all had to stop doing and being in operational work in order to lead a whole team.
Three distinct yet connected topics that were addressed during the BOOST coaching.
The BOOST solution
To meet her needs, BOOST delivered a 6-month Executive Coaching programme, at a pace of roughly one session per month. Starting from these needs, the programme adapted to the manager's daily life and supported her over a long, strategic period for her.
3 milestones marked her coaching journey:
1. Assessment and leadership posture
From the kick-off, J. and her coach worked on her posture in front of older colleagues, establishing foundations of authority and credibility to assert her legitimacy.
2. Transition towards the strategic
At the midpoint, J. learned to delegate effectively in order to free herself from operational work and focus on high-impact missions. This coaching helped her structure her leadership and move towards a long-term vision for her team.
3. Strengthening her management style
At the final review, J. asserted her management style and set clear objectives to anchor her position as a leader.
With BOOST, J. gained confidence and managed to turn her youth into a strategic asset for her new role.
